Happy Valley Garden, designed for the China International Garden Expo in Wuhan, China, creates a playful landscape centered on movement, discovery, and exploration. Sculpted landforms, bold swaths of colorful planting, and fluid concrete paths create an exaggerated topography that visitors move through, over, and between. Miniature bamboo forests and pathways create moments of enclosure and surprise, while dramatic changes in elevation continually shift views and spatial relationships. The garden encourages visitors to choose their own paths, making exploration and experience fundamental to the design. The garden balances this sense of play with an ecological approach that minimizes materials, balances cut and fill, incorporates recycled materials, and recycles water. The result is an immersive landscape that uses topography, planting, color, and movement to inspire a sense of wonder and joy.
