Brooklyn Bridge Park transforms 85 acres of former industrial waterfront along the East River into one of New York City’s most significant public landscapes. The master plan transforms abandoned piers and industrial infrastructure into a continuous landscape that reconnects Brooklyn neighborhoods to the river. The design combines recreation, ecology, dramatic views, and access to the water through a sequence of parks, gardens, pathways, and civic spaces that retain the character of the working waterfront. An exceptionally rigorous public process involving community groups, public agencies, and elected officials shaped the project and provided Counts with an important foundation for understanding how public engagement and consensus building can strengthen ambitious design ideas and create enduring civic landscapes.
