The Memorial Garden for Brice Marden is a public landscape on the Hudson River in Athens, New York, commissioned by Helen Marden in memory of her husband, artist Brice Marden. Conceived as an unfolding landscape, the garden brings sculpted topography, circulation, native planting, and locally quarried stone together as a single composition. Nearly eight feet of grade change becomes rolling landforms connected by accessible paths, creating a changing sequence of views and experiences. Native canopy and understory planting evoke a Hudson River Valley woodland, while monolithic stones emerge as geological elements, informal seating, and alternative paths through the terrain. Overlooks, lowland gardens, and a tidal cove bring visitors into close contact with the Hudson and its changing water levels. Like Marden’s paintings, the landscape is lyrical and continuously unfolding, revealing itself through movement, changing perspective, and the interlacing of landform, stone, vegetation, and water.
