Lower Don Lands

Toronto, ON

Developed with Michael Van Valkenburgh Associates, New York, NY. Christopher Counts Senior Associate and Project Designer

International Competition Winner / National ASLA Award Winner / RAIC Sustainable Development Award

Developed from the winning proposal for the international Port Lands Estuary Design Competition, the Lower Don Lands master plan reimagines more than 300 acres of Toronto’s post-industrial waterfront by restoring the mouth of the Don River as the organizing structure for a new urban district. The plan integrates a naturalized river and floodplain with new parks, wetlands, neighborhoods, transportation, and public infrastructure. A phased strategy allows landscape and ecological systems to guide the long-term transformation of the site, creating a model for integrating flood protection, habitat restoration, public space, and urban development.
