Minimalist Garden
Miami, FL
Developed with Counts Studio, Miami, FL in collaboration with Burton Hersh Architects. Christopher Counts Design Principal
This minimalist residential garden uses a limited palette of native plant material to strengthen the small site and create a landscape that feels contemporary, spacious, and closely integrated with the architecture. Tightly spaced massings of slender Solitaire palms create a strong vertical foil to the horizontal lines of the house while providing shade, shaping distinct outdoor rooms, and creating a sense of enclosure throughout the garden. Simple masses of low groundcover form a lush, continuous ground plane without unnecessary visual complexity. Repetition, scale, and restraint give the garden a strong identity and provide a clear contrast to the complex planting compositions common in many South Florida landscapes. The simplicity of the planting allows light, shadow, texture, and the architecture itself to become important elements of the garden. The limited palette also makes the garden simple to construct and easy to maintain while reinforcing the clarity of the overall composition. The result is a tropical garden that feels lush, modern, and intentionally simple.
