Huizenga Park
Ft. Lauderdale, FL
Developed with Perkins & Will, Miami, FL. Christopher Counts Design Principal

Located at the intersection of Las Olas Boulevard and the New River, Huizenga Park transforms an outdated downtown park, previously organized around a bandshell, into a vibrant civic landscape and year-round destination. The design creates interconnected outdoor rooms for recreation, play, dining, cultural programming, community events, and everyday gathering. A dynamic, shifting pavement composition moves through the park, connecting different spaces and giving the landscape a distinctive identity. The design preserves the mature oak canopy as a fundamental structure of the landscape, providing immediate shade, comfort, and character. Flexible lawns, waterfront terraces, a sculptural playground, dog run, public art, a restaurant, refreshment pavilions, and public amenities support an active park programmed throughout the day. The result is a highly used civic landscape that combines activity with quieter garden spaces while strengthening connections to the river, Riverwalk, Las Olas Boulevard, and downtown.
